DEPARTMENT'S CHAIR GREETINGS

DPASGS(C)2004

Greetings from the JSU Department of Physics, Atmospheric Sciences and Geoscience!

It is a very exciting time to major in Physics or Meteorology at JSU.  This year’s theme is “Let’s Grow in 2005”!  Our Department has begun its most aggressive recruitment campaign ever for 2005-2006 with the goal of becoming the largest producer of B.S. degrees in Physics and Meteorology from any Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the country.  Did you know that JSU is the only HBCU presently offering a degree in Meteorology?  As a matter of fact, we have been doing so for nearly 25 years!  A number of our meteorology graduates have taken highly visible positions on television with The Weather Channel, WLBT and WJTV.  You should also note that many of our physics majors have continued their graduate studies and received degrees from major nationally ranked universities like MIT, Georgia Tech, Cornell, and the University of Michigan, to name a few.

We are actively seeking bright, talented and, most importantly, dedicated students to develop into tomorrow’s researchers, corporate mangers and high-tech entrepreneurs (with our management concentration), medical doctors (with our pre-med concentration) and engineers (with our applied physics concentration).  The faculty members have a wide range of expertise and experience which covers the areas of nano-technology, materials sciences, optics and photonics, meteorological observations, modeling and forecast; computational sciences, renewable energy, earth and space science, and science education.

After reviewing the material, if you find yourself curious about these majors and wondering if you possibly have what it takes, please contact me. I will personally give you some straight talk about these wonderful areas of study.  Did you know that most students are afraid of physics because they have not been properly exposed to the subject?  Is this you?

Feel free to contact me at any time to de-mystify physics and find how fun and rewarding this major really can be.  My phone number is 601-979-7012 and my e-mail address is quinton.l.williams@jsums.edu.  Come join the fun and become a mighty Tiger of JSU!  I look forward to seeing you in the Fall.

Sincerely yours,

Quinton L. Williams, Ph.D.
